So an agent linked me up with an agent in Mali, who stuck me onto a tour with some French guys who were there to scout places for hotel investments. It turned out to be unbelievable–we had dinner at properties of officials in varied cities, including one of the superb meals I’ve ever eaten, in Timbuktu, while these guys negotiated.
But planning your journey and imagining the place to go is half of the enjoyable. I lived in Kenya for a few years and traveled to a variety of African countries. But when I needed to do a solo journey to Mali (earlier than radical nuts started running amok there), I went with a travel agent.
